Context
For 57 years, Equitas – International Centre for Human Rights Education has been working towards advancing equality, social justice and respect of human dignity all around the world. Equitas is recognized as a leader in global efforts to design and deliver innovative and effective human rights education programs for front line human rights defenders and educators, children, youth and governmental institutions. Our tools and methodology enable individuals to shape and share positive attitudes and behaviors, thus contributing to sustainable social change. Equitas has reached more than 4.5 million people in Canada and around the world.
Mandate
Equitas is looking for a consultant to develop and implement a human rights education (HRE) content-specialized application using artificial intelligence based on our resources, including a public database (https://equitas.org/learn-find-a-resource/), a list of HRE internal documents and organizational key documents. This AI application would be hosted on protected platform Moodle 4 (Equitas Community) staff and network members use. The application would resort to a translation software to provide the tools in many languages used by Equitas and partners (to be determined, languages could include French, English, Arabic, Swahili, Haitian Creole, Spanish, etc.).
Deliverables
The consultant will be responsible for the following deliverables:
- Preparation of a work plan describing how the work will be carried out. This plan will be reviewed by the Senior Communications and Community Officer and the Education and Communications Director to ensure agreement between the two parties.
- Consultation with the team on the AI model to develop and brief report of the results.
- Development of the AI model and implementation into Moodle 4.
- Follow-up with the team to answer questions during the 3 first months of use.
- Preparation and direction of a training session, to be recorded by Equitas for future reference, to present the AI model to Equitas users and partners who will use it.
Consultation activities will be delivered in French (but the software will be available in many languages, according to the agreed terms and conditions of the contract). The consultant will ensure the main deliverable complies with other Equitas tools and guidelines in terms of the format and structure. The quality and contents of the deliverable will be evaluated and validated by the Education and Communications Director (consulting with the Senior Communications and Community Officer).
Activities
To successfully carry out the mandate and produce the expected deliverables, the consultant will be required to:
- Consult Equitas stakeholders, including but not limited to, the Senior Communications and Community Officer, the Education and Communications Director, the Knowledge Manager, involved project teams and partners, in order to gain a better understanding of the needs of the organization in relation to the deliverables expected of this consultancy.
- Review existing Equitas manuals and tools.
- Partake in online follow-up meetings with the Senior Communications and Community Officer, Education and Communications Director, to review the progress of the work plan, possible difficulties and/or needs of support to provide the expected services.
Duration, degree of effort and location
- Number of days of the contract: The budget must be proposed by the consultant.
- Execution period: The consultancy will take place between May and September 2024.
- Location: Remote. The contract will be carried out at home and all meetings will be virtual. The consultant must provide all the necessary equipment (ex.: computer, telephone, Internet, etc.).
Management terms
The consultant will report directly to the Equitas Education and Communications Director Jean-Sébastien Vallée (responsible for the approval of deliverables and invoices). Equitas will provide the necessary documents for the mandate. The consultant will work closely with the Senior Communications and Community Officer.
Ideal qualifications
The consultant should possess the following experience, skills and knowledge:
- Practical experience in developing and implementing an application that uses artificial intelligence in Moodle.
- Professional experience in learner-centered curriculum design and training delivery.
- Ability to communicate orally, read and understand documents in Canada’s two official languages (English and French) and excellent writing skills in French.
- Demonstrated commitment to contribute and promote a workplace valuing diversity, inclusion and equality.
- Proven experience in collaborating with non-profit organizations, in an advisor or consultant position.
- Time and available resources management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
