Equitas is concerned about the physical security and safety of one of its alumni in Bahrain. Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja was arrested and beaten unconscious by police in the early morning of April 9, 2011. His current whereabouts and the whereabouts of his two sons-in-law arrested at the same time remain unknown. We understand from reports from Abdulhadi’s family as well as reports by Frontline, Amnesty International and FIDH that the arrests and beatings took place after police forced their way into his daughter’s house in Manama. In March, anonymous death threats had been circulating online against Abdulhadi and three other prominent human rights defenders. Abdulhadi is the former President of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) and has been active in the pro-democracy movement. He attended Equitas’ International Human Rights Training Program in 2004 and has been a member of our MENA alumni network ever since.
