Peace Days 2022 – Take action for equality: End racism. Build peace

Equitas is participating in the 8th edition of Peace Days, an initiative of the Peace Network for Social Harmony, that will take place from September 21 to October 2. The event kicks off on the UN International Day of Peace and wraps up on the UN International Day of Non-Violence.

This year’s Peace Days, under the theme Take action for equality: End racism. Build peace, is again inviting people to become actors for equality and to recognize that everyone has a role to play towards achieving a just, egalitarian, inclusive, non-violent and harmonious society. The upcoming edition also features last year’s Peace Days Ambassadors, author and host Kim Thúy, and Brian Bronfman, President and Co-founder of the Peace Network for Social Harmony and long-time friend of Equitas. The 12-day Peace Days program features more than 40 events, including two offered by Equitas.

Exclusion by Numbers

The first is the Exclusion by Numbers activity, to do with the children and youth around you, which we propose to do on September 21 for the International Day of Peace. This activity, taken from Equitas’ Building Inclusive Communities guide and adapted in the context of Peace Days 2022, asks children to think about situations of racism, discrimination and exclusion, to explore what it feels like to be treated unfairly, and to discuss how to adopt more inclusive behaviors.

Understanding and countering online hate

The second is a youth workshop offered by Equitas in Montreal on September 29, aimed at understanding how online hate manifests itself and identifying strategies to respond to it. This participatory workshop will explore what online hate is, what hate speech is and the digital spaces in which these experiences take place. The workshop will also equip you to become an ally in countering online hate and defending the right to non-discrimination. It will include activities to understand how online hate manifests itself and strategies to respond to it. This workshop is for youth between the ages of 14 and 25. For more information, click here

“With respect to equality, it is achieved through society’s commitment to equity and social justice. Equity implies the fair treatment of all people regardless of their identities, beliefs, status or values. It is through equity that we can achieve equality of rights and opportunities, by taking into account the needs and lived realities of each person. We invite you, as part of Peace Days 2022, to promote equity in the fight against discrimination, racism and exclusion, as we build a more just, inclusive, harmonious and egalitarian society.”

Brian Bronfman, President and Co-founder of the Peace Network for Social Harmony as well as and long-time friend and supporter of Equitas.
