The opportunity
Equitas is seeking a highly motivated Senior Communications and Community Officer with a passion for human rights, equality and inclusion, and a wealth of communications experience. Reporting to the Director of Education and Communications, this person supports Equitas’ communications and knowledge sharing strategy by creating and publishing engaging content on Equitas’ various communications platforms. This includes the Equitas Online Community, a community of practice in human rights education that brings together nearly 8 000 human rights defenders and educators from around the world. The successful candidate will participate in the development and coordination of several communications initiatives, focusing on the creation of content for Equitas’ social media, website and online Community of Practice. He/she will also work closely with the program teams.
Duties and responsibilities
Creating and organizing online content
- In collaboration with the Director, develop Equitas communication strategies, annual and budget plans, and actively contribute to organizational reflection and learning processes.
- Contribute to online engagement strategy; write blog posts and social media publications.
- Create engaging visuals aligned with the Equitas brand image to accompany various publications
- Organize content to encourage engagement, respond to online comments and participate in the development of content strategies.
- Manage social network advertising campaigns, create newsletters and perform data analysis.
- Learn about industry trends and create visually appealing publications for digital spaces.
- Ensure consistency between the various digital spaces in line with the online engagement strategy.
Communications – other
- Implement Equitas’ communications strategy
- Support the management of the Equitas website, in particular by updating page content.
- Ensure consistent use of the Equitas brand image and adherence to graphic standards throughout the organization.
- Support the Communications and Development team in planning and organizing fundraising and donor loyalty events.
- Support teams in the design, layout, translation and revision of various publications
- Coordinate work with volunteers, printers and graphic designers.
- Assist the Director of Education and Communications with media relations and events.
- Contribute to the management of the ethical use of images and compliance with ethical consent processes related to photo-taking.
- Participate in the internal development and knowledge-sharing team.
Management of the online Community of Practice and learning platform
- Maintain and nurture the Equitas Community, a global platform for human rights education.
- Ensuring the day-to-day management and vitality of the Equitas Community.
- Share resources and respond to user requests.
- Create and publish compelling content based on online discussions.
- Manage data collection and statistical analysis.
- Collaborate to develop and maintain the online platform on human rights education.
- Maintain positive relations with Equitas alumni and stakeholders.
About you
You are passionate about human rights and social justice, with a particular interest in these areas. You are motivated by and committed to Equitas’ mission, vision and values. You are motivated by challenges and have proven experience in creating and organizing online content. You have excellent communication skills in French and English, as well as the ability to animate online communities and coordinate mobilization campaigns on social networks.
What is essential for the role
- Opportunity to work in Canada and be based in Montreal;
- University degree in Communications or related field;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in communications, marketing or social media management;
- Proven ability in writing, communications or related fields (e.g. design, marketing);
- High level of fluency in social media management and knowledge of social media tools and trends;
- Solid knowledge of content management systems (CMS such as WordPress or others) and website management tools and trends;
- Basic knowledge of graphic design and proficiency in the use of graphics software such as Canva and Adobe Illustrator
- Strong information management skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in both official languages (French and English);
An asset for the position
- Experience in the NGO sector.
- Solid knowledge of learning management systems (ENA such as Moodle or other) is an asset;
- Knowledge of Google Analytics and Looker Studio is an asset;
- Knowledge of photography, video and video editing is an asset;
- Knowledge of the following software is an asset: MailChimp or equivalent, Canva or equivalent, Adobe Creative Suite.
