Consultancy Opportunity: Graphic Designer for the Layout and Design of the Human Rights Anti-Racism Guide

Context

For 57 years, Equitas – International Centre for Human Rights Education has been working towards advancing equality, social justice and respect of human dignity all around the world. Equitas is recognized as a leader in global efforts to design and deliver innovative and effective human rights education programs for front line human rights defenders and educators, children, youth and governmental institutions. Our tools and methodology enable individuals to shape and share positive attitudes and behaviors, thus contributing to sustainable social change. Equitas has reached more than 4.5 million people in Canada and around the world. 

Mandate

Equitas is looking for a consultant to design and layout a human rights anti-racism guide. The consultant will be responsible for creating a visually engaging and accessible design, including a compelling cover, a dynamic table of contents, and transforming approximately 200 pages of text into an appealing, readable format. This project also involves creating custom illustrations to emphasize key concepts.  

Deliverables

The consultant will be responsible for the following deliverables: 

  • Submission of an initial draft template for approval before proceeding with the full guide design. 
  • Cover page design  
  • Visual table of contents  
  • 12 PDF files for each of the six (6) chapters (6 each in French and English) 
  • 12 editable files (Canva format preferred) 
  • Ensure that all text remains fully editable (not vectorized) for future modifications. 
  • Three (3) rounds of revisions to ensure the final design meets project requirements. 

The consultant will ensure the main deliverable complies with other Equitas tools and guidelines in terms of the format and structure. The quality and contents of the deliverable will be evaluated and validated by the Human Rights Education Advisor (consulting with the Senior Program Officer). 

Activities

To successfully carry out the mandate and produce the expected deliverables, the consultant will be required to: 

  • Consult Equitas stakeholders, including but not limited to the Human Rights Education Advisor, the Senior Program Officer, involved project teams and partners, to gain a better understanding of the needs of the organization in relation to the deliverables expected of this consultancy. 
  • Review existing Equitas manuals and tools. 
  • Partake in online follow-up meetings with the Human Rights Education Advisor and Senior Program Officer to review the progress of the work plan, possible difficulties and/or needs of support to provide the expected services. 

Duration, degree of effort and location

  • Number of days of the contract: The work plan will be proposed by the consultant and will be finalized after a discussion with Equitas  
  • Execution period: The consultancy will take place between October and December 2024. 
  • Location: Remote. The contract will be carried out at home and all meetings will be virtual. The consultant must provide all the necessary equipment (ex.: computer, telephone, Internet, etc.). 

Management terms

The consultant will report directly to the Human Rights Education Advisor (responsible for the approval of deliverables and invoices). Equitas will provide the necessary documents for the mandate. The consultant will work closely with the Senior Program Officer. 

Ideal qualifications

The consultant should possess the following experience, skills and knowledge: 

  • Proven experience in graphic design, particularly in designing guides, reports, or educational materials. 
  • Strong skills in layout design, text visualization, and creating engaging, readable documents. 
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Canva. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and incorporate feedback through multiple rounds of revisions. 
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards in design, ensuring the guide is inclusive and user-friendly. 
  • Ability to communicate orally, read, and understand documents in either of Canada’s two official languages (English or French), with preference for English. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to contribute and promote a workplace valuing diversity, inclusion and equality. 
  • Proven experience in collaborating with non-profit organizations, in an advisor or consultant position. 
  • Experience in working on projects related to social justice, anti-racism, or human rights is an asset. 
  • Time and available resources management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
