In today’s world, digital security is increasingly important especially for the work of human rights defenders are doing, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made it even more critical. More of our lives are spent in front of screens, and we must have the means to make this part of our lives as safe as possible. The total elimination of risk is impossible and, in some cases, not desirable. Evolving threats require that human rights defenders remain resilient and agile in the face of risk so that they can continue to adapt to a constantly changing world.  

About the course

Digital Security: Protecting your information and protecting yourself online.
This course is designed to
provide a comprehensive understanding of digital security principles, practices, and techniques. In today’s interconnected world, where data breaches and cyber threats are prevalent, it is essential to have a solid foundation in digital security to protect personal information, safeguard online activities, and ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digital assets. 
 

Objective of the course

This course is not just about eliminating all risk; it’s about building resilience and agility in the face of evolving threats. It is also impossible to talk about digital security without addressing the other aspects that affect the work of human rights defenders. The devices we use to go online remain physical and tangible devices that must be protected to continue doing our work. In addition, all security issues come with factors that can negatively influence our psychological health, whether through an attack or a constant feeling of insecurity.

For this reason, this course also takes a holistic approach to security that includes physical, digital and personal security.   

Course duration

You can take the course at your own pace and in your own time. This course has three modules. The estimated time for completing the course is 50 minutes. However, depending on your level of participation, this time may be shorter or longer.

After taking this Digital Security course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of securing digital systems and data,  
  • Identify common security threats and vulnerabilities,  
  • Name effective measures to protect against cyber attacks,  
  • Understand encryption techniques to safeguard sensitive information,
