Gina Hill Birriel (she/her) holds an LL.D. from the University of Ottawa where her research and dissertation focused on the role of NGOs in the creation of international human rights standards. Multilingual and with a strong international background, Gina has volunteered with several non-profits, including serving in numerous governance roles in Amnesty International at the Canadian and global level. She is particularly interested in the intersection of diversity equity inclusion and governance, and currently serves as Manager of Governance at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Why Equitas? I was fortunate to participate in the Human Rights Training Programme of the Canadian Human Rights Foundation (as Equitas was then) in 1995, and learnt how critical human rights training is to understanding the structures within which equality and social justice struggles take place. Equitas plays a critical role in providing rightsholders with the tools they need to assert their rights and build bridges with various stakeholders. I am honoured to be able to contribute to this important work.
