Democracy… Where are we now?

In Canada, and around the world, we are facing threats to democracy. We are seeing the spread of false information through deepfakes, and many people are relying too heavily on social media for news instead of turning to trusted journalism. Us-versus-them thinking is growing, and public trust in our democratic institutions and political leaders is declining. Core democratic values—such as equality, freedom of expression, and human rights—are being challenged more than ever.

What is democracy?

“For me, democracy is having the opportunity to vote and knowing that my choice will be respected. It is knowing that people I will vote for will respect their engagements. If they don’t, I can ask questions, have access to the information about the decisions they make. Also, when I have any issue, I can see my elected officials, I can be listened to, no matter who I am. I know that this person can support me.”

Democracy depends on strong institutions, where power is not concentrated in the hands of a few people. The separation of legislative, executive, and judicial powers ensures that decisions are made transparently, leaders are held accountable, and the rights of individuals are protected.
