May 10th – Youth are leading change in their communities. Join the movement!

This is an inspiring time for youth-led social change across the world, and in Montreal!

 

Young leaders are taking action to build more equitable and inclusive communities. We are pleased to invite you to our Speaking Rights 2018 Community Event, to join the 6 initiatives launched by youth in the communities of across the city of Montreal.

 

On Thursday, May 10, we invite you to connect with these youth-leaders to better understand how issues such as racism and exclusion, gender inequality, and homophobia are affecting diverse community-members. Please join us and engage with the youth to reflect together on strategies and explores avenues for solutions!

5:30-6:00pm | Opening + Networking

6 :00-7:00pm| Presentation of projects and thematic discussions with the youth

7:00-8:00pm | Dance performance + closing remarks + Food and beverages + photos

 

Montreal youth from the following organisations are taking action to address these issues:

 

  • Mouvement contre le viol et l’inceste is providing safe spaces for young people, particularly those from ethnocultural communities, living with a disability, from the LGBTQI+ community, marginalized youth, and youth living in situations of poverty. In these spaces, youth people share their experiences and talk about their understanding of healthy relationships, molestation and consent.
  • Repaire jeunesse Dawson Boys & Girls Club are amplifying youth voices by creating equal opportunities for youth from all background to meet with decision makers and share their perspectives on promoting intercultural awareness, building stronger communities and creating opportunities for diversity in youth engagement.
  • Youth group of from Quebec Native Women (QNW) are leading the creation of an inclusive policy for our LGBTQI+/Two-spirited members, aiming to engage Indigenous youth from across the province in the development of the policy to ensure QNW is an organization more inclusive to LGBTQI+/Two-Spirited members as well as sensitizing our members to LGBTQI/Two-Spirited issues.
  • A youth network at Native Montreal are developing a peer led support network for Indigenous 2SLGBTIQ youth to empower two spirit youths through community building and provide a culturally safe space for them to come together and talk about their experiences and address their needs.
  • Say Ça! Montréal is providing a platform for newcomers and refugee youth to express themselves so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow. A group of youths created a booklet on culinary art therapy as a way to deal with stress. Another group is  choreographing life stories and doing performances to share their stories. Other groups are building sports coaching skills and creating spaces on social media for open dialogue.
  • A group of young women from La Maison d’Haïti works to increase the safety of girls and educate adolescents on issues such as healthy relationships. They initiated a project to create an information booklet to raise awareness among adolescent youth, on safety and egalitarian relationships, addressing problematic such as hypersexualisation, sexism, molestation, recruitment for the purpose of sexual exploitation and respect for the rights of women.

 

This year, Equitas’ Speaking Rights is building a movement of more than 500 youth-leaders from 35 communities coast to coast to coast, to take action on local challenges through innovative, engaging and creative community action projects.  Come be inspired and join the movement!
