March 21, 2010: Margaret Sekaggya joins Equitas Honorary Board

Equitas is pleased to announce that Margaret Sekaggya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders has accepted our invitation to serve on Equitas’ Honorary Board. As member of the Honorary Board, Mrs. Sekaggya joins a group of distinguished individuals who are committed to Equitas’ mission of advancing equality, social justice and respect for human dignity in Canada and around the world through transformative human rights education programs. Mrs. Sekaggya is a magistrate from Uganda and was the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission from 1996 to 2008. In 2008, she was appointed Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders by the United Nations Human Rights Council and is a member of the United Nations High Level Task Force on the Implementation of the Right to Development. Throughout her career, Mrs. Sekaggya has paid particular attention to human rights issues concerning vulnerable groups such as people affected and infected with HIV/AIDS, the disabled, children, women and the elderly.
