In Canada, it’s easy to take democracy for granted. But democracy doesn’t sustain itself. It depends on ensuring that young people have a voice in the decisions shaping their lives today, and a meaningful role in shaping the democracy of tomorrow.
A strong democracy does not rely solely on its institutions. It also relies on people who feel heard, empowered, and capable of participating fully in the decisions that affect their lives and communities.
More and more people, especially young people, feel excluded from the decisions that shape their future. This gap between youth and decision-makers isn’t just an administrative detail, it directly weakens civic participation and, ultimately, democracy itself.
September 15, was International Day of Democracy, which is a reminder that a strong democracy doesn’t rest on institutions alone, but on every person’s ability to be heard and to inform decisions that affect them.
What Equitas Does ?
Equitas closes the gap between youth voice and public decision-making by equipping them with the tools, training and spaces to carry their own voice to the institutions that affect their lives and works with trusted community organizations to help young people turn the issues they care about into action.
In Vancouver, ten youth leaders trained by Equitas took action. Through the Building Safer Communities Program, they ran engagement sessions with 150+ young people across eight neighbourhoods, helping them pinpoint who’s responsible, name what needs to change, and bring their priorities straight to decision-makers.
These initiatives do more than build confidence. They give institutions real, community-rooted insight, and they create lasting bridges between youth and decision-makers The result is more authentic civic participation and a democracy better grounded in the realities of every generation. This is the kind of infrastructure that strong democracies depend on.
Democracy isn’t built only at the ballot box. It’s built every day, in every space where someone feels genuinely heard.
