Title: Artist in residence

Location: Montreal, Canada

Status : Consultancy – 9 weeks, from May 30 to July 29, 2022

Application deadline: May 20, 2022

Be part of positive social change

Equitas is a Canadian non-profit organization whose primary mission is to advance equality, social justice and respect for human dignity. Imagine creating art for an organization that aligns with your personal values and helping to create positive social change. Alongside nearly 60 like-minded colleagues based in Canada and partners around the world, you could help Equitas build more inclusive and rights-respecting communities.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Development, but working with people across the organization, the Equitas Artist-in-Residence will help the organization integrate art into our workspace and learning events. Equitas is in the process of redesigning our workspace to make it more functional for a hybrid work environment. We want to incorporate art elements into the office spaces to visually reflect the mission, vision and values of our organization. In addition, we are hosting a week-long learning event in July with international partners and would like to incorporate art into this event. The Artist-in-Residence would help us achieve these goals and use their creativity, technical skills and innovative ideas to do so.

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities

 Collective Art Project

  • Plan and implement a collective art piece to be developed at a networking/learning event in July with Equitas staff, partners, board members and funders.
  • Engage event participants in the creation of the artwork, understand the purpose and feel connected to the overall image/goal.
  • Plan the integration of this collective artwork into the Equitas offices after the event.

Artful office redesign

  • Propose ideas and implement solutions to integrate visual arts into office spaces to make the environment more attractive, welcoming and creative, and to reflect Equitas’ mission, vision and values (e.g., a mural, art installation, etc.).
  • Propose ideas and implement solutions to make the office space more accessible to all (e.g., rethinking accessibility for people living with disabilities, updating signage for inclusive restrooms, etc.).
  • Create signage and descriptions for artwork already in the office workspace.
  • Propose ideas and pursue implementation of solutions, in consultation and with the support of the Office Improvement Committee, which is responsible for decision making and execution, to make the office space more functional for a hybrid work environment, based on staff feedback and suggestions for their needs (e.g., creating more collaborative spaces, purchasing plants, furnishings, developing signage for dedicated spaces, etc.)

About you?

You are passionate about human rights and social justice and are motivated by Equitas’ mission, vision and values. You are a visual artist brimming with creativity and innovative ideas. You like the idea of coordinating the creation of a collective work of art and integrating a participatory approach in its development. You are knowledgeable in interior design and have creative ideas for optimizing work spaces for creativity and collaboration. You are able to speak English and French, are based in Montreal and are interested in using art to help Equitas foster an inclusive work environment that reflects the diversity of the community.
