IHRTP 2016 – 90 human rights defenders arrive in Montreal

The 37th International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) is well under-way, with participants from all around the world! The 2016 IHRTP,  taking place from June 6-24 at the John Abbott College Campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, is a once in a lifetime, intensive 3-week training experience. This year, we have welcomed over 90 human rights defenders from 50 countries, having had to narrow down the selection from over 770 applications – a very difficult task every year!

The Program prides itself on bringing together international participants from varied backgrounds to discuss and deepen their knowledge of human rights. This diversity brings a great richness to the program as participants work together and collaborate to find new ideas for positive change in their communities. We believe that this diversity drives innovation.

As well as providing a forum for sharing insightful personal experiences, the IHRTP trains, equips and engages participants through a participatory approach, providing a unique opportunity to further their understanding of how human rights education can effect lasting social change in their communities based on their own actions.

Over the course of its 37 years, the IHRTP has been widely praised for its innovative approach, diversity and expertise. It has harnessed international recognition and has trained over 3,500 participants, including several world leaders, in human rights. Given the rich encounters of cultures and countries, the IHRTP fosters an international networking movement for like-minded individuals to share their ideas and experiences, and continues to connect the community long after the end of the Program. We look forward to welcoming the participants for 2016, and strongly encourage anyone interested to browse our social media and blog for updates during the program.

This program is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada, as well as support the American Jewish World Service.
