May 27, 2014: The Ruth Selwyn Bursary to be awarded to a women’s rights defender in Laos

Equitas is proud to announce that it will be awarding the 2014 Ruth Selwyn Bursary to Inthana Bouphasavanh, a very active leader in Laos in the field of women’s rights. For the past three years, she has developed and designed trainings for the Association for Development of Women and Legal Education (ADWLE), an organization that focuses on gender rights education. Inthana’s work contributed to making ADWLE a prominent women’s rights advocacy group in Laos. She helped organize the Anti-Violence Against Women’s day, last November, and she’s also coordinating Laos’ civil society work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The 2014 Ruth Selwyn Bursary will be presented in Montreal, on June 18, at the 35th International Human Rights Training Program. The Ruth Selwyn Bursary for Achievement in Empowering Women and Girls is conferred each year on a candidate to attend the International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP). The Bursary recognizes the exceptional role and contributions of Ruth Selwyn, the past Executive Director of Equitas, who laid the groundwork for the IHRTP to become the world’s preeminent human rights training program and whose career spanned a lifetime of engagement in the struggle for equality. The bursary is financed from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada’s contribution to the Global Human Rights Education Program. The Bursary includes full tuition (including room and board) for the three-week training program as well as travel expenses. The recipient will also join Equitas’ global network of alumni, be eligible to participate in a variety of follow-up activities and able to solicit Equitas for technical support in the implementation of his/her education activities.
