June 22, 2010: Equitas Supporters Join Human Rights Defenders at the International Human Rights Training Program

Earlier this summer, Equitas hosted an Open House for partners and some of our long-time donors to spend a full day at the International Human Rights Training Program, Equitas’ cornerstone program. Our guests were introduced to the program and were given the opportunity to join the participants in a session where they simulated the monitoring of human rights abuses taking place in a fictional village. It was a very special opportunity for guests to get a first-hand view of what goes on during the IHRTP. Since 1980, the International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) has trained over 3,000 human rights workers from over 100 countries. Every year, Equitas hosts some 120 participants a year from over 60 countries here in Montréal for three weeks. The participants learn how to become more effective agents of social change. Your support helps ensure that these incredible and inspiring individuals can not only attend this one-of-a-kind training, but that they put their learning into action and create positive change once they return home. With your help, some of the IHRTP alumni have contributed some truly incredible changes: • India: Successful village-level campaigns led by children to end the practice of female infanticide • Kenya: Successful campaign to introduce compulsory and free primary education • Democratic Republic of the Congo: Mobilization of women in a campaign to end impunity for perpetrators of sexual violence • Haiti: Promotion of citizen engagement in earthquake-affected communities to defend the rights of women, youth, children and the disabled • Middle East and North Africa: Establishment of a regional network of activists committed to advancing the values of human rights and democracy We are deeply grateful to you, our supporters, donors and friends, for your continued support. By supporting Equitas, you are reaching out to hundreds of people around the world who are contributing to building a global culture of human rights. Thank you!!
