Amrita joined Equitas’ education team in August 2021 as the BC office’s first education specialist. She is assigned to the Ministry of Education’s K-12 Anti-Racism Action Plan project, Pathways to Racial Justice. She has an MA in social anthropology from York University, BEd in secondary history and social studies from the University of British Columbia and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and history. Amrita has a passion for social justice education and anti-racist pedagogy. She has over five years of teaching and curriculum experience, ranging from work in public schools, alternative education, teaching in The Bahamas and creating African Canadian curriculum with the Harriet Tubman Institute at York University. Amrita has written and delivered workshops for Coquitlam and Surrey School Districts on culturally responsive teaching practices using textbooks in social studies and applying hip hop pedagogy in the English Language Arts classroom. She has enjoyed sharing her views on social justice teaching practices in the BCTF Teacher Magazine and BCTF Social Justice Newsletter.
