The Global Human Rights Education Program (GHREP) equips human rights defenders and educators with knowledge and skills that will help them promote and protect human rights principles and values more effectively in their communities. It builds upon the experience and networks developed by Equitas since 1980 as a result of its annual International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP). In order to consolidate the impact of the IHRTP, Equitas developed a systematic strategy to engage with alumni of the program and provide more specialized training as well as ongoing coaching and support as they put their learning into action.

The activities of the GHREP include:
• The International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) brings together up to 130 human rights defenders and educators from approximately 60 countries for three weeks in June to attend the training session in Montréal
• Advanced Human Rights Education Training Workshops permit selected IHRTP alumni to develop specialized skills in the design and delivery of human rights training sessions
• National or Sub-regional Human Rights Training Sessions are designed to respond to the needs of emerging alumni networks who are interested in creating their own training programs integrating the methodology of the International Human Rights Training Program in Montréal
• Coaching, Support and Evaluation
• The online Equitas Community, a members-only online forum that includes virtual conferences, online training courses as well as regional and thematic discussion groups

National or Sub-regional Human Rights Training Sessions – A Lasting Impact
Equitas is working with alumni in Indonesia, Haiti, East and West Africa and Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union to design and deliver training sessions based on the content and methodology of the IHRTP in Montréal. The process allows the alumni to take ownership of the participatory education approaches and builds sustainable capacity to provide human rights education and training to thousands of human rights educators and defenders who will never be able to travel to attend our annual program in Montréal.

February, 2010 – National Human Rights Training Sessions in Depok, Indonesia and Sub-regional Human Rights Training Session in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso with human rights educators from Burkina Faso, Cameroun and Senegal
