Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender People

On Saturday 9 June 2012, 56 participants from the International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) participated in a session on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Participants from over 30 countries were part of this session. The session was an opportunity for participants to share information about the situation of LGBT people and rights issues that affect them in different parts of the world; to identify challenges that human rights defenders working on LGBT issues are currently facing in their work as well as strategies for addressing these challenges and discuss potential collaboration and networking activities on LGBT issues. The session was held in a positive and accepting atmosphere, where issues were explored openly and discussed with respect. Participants discussed basic values of respect, equality and dignity that lead the actions of human rights defenders in promoting and defending LBGT rights. They shared strategies and resources, discussed how to raise awareness about the issues. Participants mentioned that they felt better equipped to share knowledge with other human rights educators after this session. Three resource people (a university professor and NGO representatives) were part of the session to support the participants in their learning process.
