It wasn’t until 2004 that Equitas began to engage in Latin America in a significant way. Similar to the process in other regions, this engagement began with the participation of Latin American organizations in Equitas’ annual International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP). There are now over 75 alumni of the program from the region, including civil society representatives, government officials and staff of national human rights institutions.

Current Activities

As part of the Global Human Rights Education Program, the first-ever regional alumni meeting took place in Quito, Ecuador in November 2009 and set the stage for an Advanced Human Rights Education Training Workshop also in Quito in March 2010. Following the March 2010 workshop, participants applied their learning in the design and delivery of Local Human Rights Education Activities. Ten activities were implemented in seven countries all using non-discrimination as a lens for analysis and training. These included and formed the basis of an Evaluation Workshop in Lima, Peru in September 2010.

Equitas is now working with a number of alumni to design and deliver a Sub-Regional Human Rights Training Session for the Andean Region (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru).
